Over five million car accidents happen every year in the US. The good thing is that most accidents only involve property damage. But, if you’ve ever been in a car accident, no matter how big or small, you know that it causes a lot stress and anxiety.
That’s why we created this simple cheat sheet so that you’ll know exactly what to do.
Step 1 – Assess the situation.
As soon as the accident happens, determine if you or anyone involved is injured. If you’re at all unsteady or groggy, call 911 right away.
Step 2 – Move your car to a safe place.
If the car is able and no one is seriously hurt, move the vehicle to safety. Get away from the main road and away from traffic so there isn’t another crash.
Step 3 – Call for help.
Usually, a police officer will show up soon after the accident, especially if it involves more than two vehicles. But if no help shows up, call one for assistance. If you feel uncomfortable, hold off on any negotiations with the others involved until the police do arrive.
Step 4 – Take notes.
While waiting for the police, take as many notes about the situation as possible so that you have what you need for an insurance claim. Get the name, contact details, and insurance information of the other people involved.
Step 5 – Ask for any medical records.
If the accident requires you or another person to seek medical help, make sure get those records. Ask for copies of the reports because you may need them for your insurance claim.
Step 6 – Call your agent.
Call your insurance agent as soon as possible. Notify the insurance company of what happened so they can get your claim started as soon as possible. Don’t wait, because there is a two-year time limit for bringing a lawsuit to the party at-fault in the state of Georgia.
