An SR-22 is not an insurance policy. It is a certificate of financial responsibility that your insurance company files with the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) to prove you carry at least the state’s minimum liability coverage. If a court or the DDS has told you that you need one, Signature Insurance can usually get it filed the same day you call.

What Is SR-22 Insurance?
An SR-22 is a form, not a separate policy. When you need one, you buy a regular auto insurance policy and your insurance company files the SR-22 with the Georgia DDS on your behalf. The filing tells the state you are insured, and it stays on file for as long as you are required to carry it, which in Georgia is usually three years from the date of your conviction or suspension.
Not every insurance company is willing to file SR-22s, and many that do charge much higher rates for it. That is where working with an independent agency makes a real difference.
Who Needs an SR-22 in Georgia?
The DDS or a judge will tell you if you need an SR-22. The most common reasons are:
- A DUI conviction
- Driving without insurance, or a lapse in coverage while your registration was active
- Reinstating a suspended or revoked license
- Too many points on your record, or being labeled a habitual violator
- An at-fault accident while uninsured
If you received a notice from the DDS, bring it with you or have it handy when you call. It tells us exactly which form the state expects, which matters because Georgia actually has two.
What Is the Difference Between an SR-22 and an SR-22A?
Georgia is one of the few states with two versions of the form. A standard SR-22 is typically required after a first offense, and you can pay your premium monthly like any other policy. An SR-22A is required for repeat offenses, most often a second suspension for driving without insurance, and Georgia requires the policy behind it to be paid six months in advance with no monthly payment option.
If your DDS notice says SR-22A, a regular SR-22 will not satisfy it. We handle both filings and will make sure the right one goes to the state the first time.
How Much Does SR-22 Insurance Cost in Georgia?
The filing itself is cheap, usually a one-time fee of about $15 to $35. The real cost is the change in your premium, and that depends on the violation behind the filing, your driving history, where you live, and the vehicle you drive.
This is exactly the situation an independent agency is built for. Because we shop dozens of carriers, including several that specialize in drivers with a DUI, an accident, or a coverage lapse on their record, we can compare real options instead of quoting you one company’s high-risk rate and calling it a day.
How Do I Get an SR-22 in Georgia?
- Start a quote or call us. Tell us you need an SR-22 or SR-22A and what the notice says. Start online here or call (770) 867-1964.
- We shop and file. We compare carriers that accept SR-22 filings, you pick the policy, and the carrier files electronically with the Georgia DDS, often the same day.
- Keep the policy active. Carry the coverage continuously for the full requirement period, usually three years, and the filing takes care of itself.
What Happens If My Policy Lapses?
If an SR-22 policy is cancelled or lapses, the insurance company is required to notify the state by filing an SR-26. The DDS will suspend your license again, and in most cases your three-year clock starts over. A missed payment can literally add years to the requirement, so if money gets tight, call us before the due date. Adjusting a policy is always cheaper than restarting a suspension.
Why File Your SR-22 with an Independent Agency?
Signature Insurance Group is a family-owned Georgia agency that has been doing this since 1978, with seven local offices and a 4.8-star Google rating. Captive agents can only offer you their one company’s rate, and many of the big national brands will not file SR-22s at all. We work with dozens of carriers, several of them friendly to high-risk drivers, and a real person in your town handles your filing and answers the phone when the DDS has questions.
Already insured with us? Contact your local office and we will add the filing to your existing policy if your carrier supports it, or move you to one that does. You can also read more about our agency or explore our auto insurance coverage options.
Common SR-22 Questions
How long do I need an SR-22 in Georgia?
In most cases, three years from the date of the conviction or suspension that triggered it. The exact period is set by the DDS or the court, and it does not shrink if you switch insurance companies. The coverage just has to stay continuous for the whole window.
Can I get an SR-22 if I don’t own a car?
Yes. A non-owner SR-22 policy covers you when you drive borrowed or rented vehicles and satisfies the state’s filing requirement. It is usually cheaper than a standard policy, and it is the normal route for getting a license reinstated before buying your next car.
Will an SR-22 make my insurance expensive forever?
No. The rate increase comes from the violation on your record, not the form itself, and its effect fades over time. Once the filing period ends and the violation ages off, your rates come back down. We re-shop your policy at renewal so you are never paying high-risk rates longer than you have to.
Can you file my SR-22 the same day?
Usually, yes. Once you choose a policy and make your first payment, the carrier files electronically with the Georgia DDS, and in most cases it is transmitted the same business day. If you are working against a reinstatement deadline, call us and tell us. We deal with those deadlines all the time.
How do I know if I need an SR-22 or an SR-22A?
Your DDS notice or court paperwork will say which one. As a rule of thumb, first offenses get a standard SR-22 and repeat no-insurance suspensions get an SR-22A, which must be prepaid for six months. If you are not sure, read us the notice over the phone and we will tell you.
Does the SR-22 go away automatically?
The filing requirement ends when your period is up, but the form does not always remove itself from your policy. When your requirement ends, tell us and we will confirm with the DDS, have the filing removed, and re-quote your policy without it. That last step is where most people miss out on savings.
